Vision, passion, courage key leadership mantras: Kalam @ NHRD
To lead organizations successfully, leaders now need to have a clear vision and pursue it with passion, courage & innovation.
The world of business is changing dramatically, and to lead organizations successfully in this volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world, leaders need to have a clear vision and pursue it with passion, courage & innovation. That was the message conveyed by former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam at his keynote address at the National HRD Conference, held in Hyderabad from November 29 to December 1. MBAUniverse.com was the online portal partner of this prestigious conference. Dr Kalams address was the highlight of the conference with more than 1,500 delegates gathering to hear the affable leader.
The world has changed dramatically. In past, while having high natural resources was the key strategic advantage for nations and companies, it is knowledge power that really matters today. Yesterday was all about hierarchies, command and control style of leadership, today meritocracy must rule, said Dr Kalam.
Drawing on his decades of experience at successfully leading Indias space missions, and later as the President of the country, Dr Kalam spelled out his leadership mantras The first thing that leaders must have is a clear vision. Leaders like Vikram Sarabhai played a great role in transforming India into a modern nation with their grand vision. Then, a leader must have the passion to put vision into action. In executing its vision, a leader must not merely follow the beaten path. They must have the courage to explore new solutions.
In its journey, leader will meet with failure, but they must not let the failure derail him. Dont let problems dominate you. Instead, you must proactively address the problem and solve it.
Commenting on the NHRD Conference theme of Energizing for Excellence, Dr Kalam said, Excellence is not an accident, it is a habit. Leaders must energize themselves and their teams to excel.
The three-day conference also saw policy makers, CEOs and HR leaders discuss and debate the state of business and HR practices in India. Arun Maira, member, Planning Commission, spoke on the theme of energizing nation for excellence. Other key speakers at the conference included Mr SY Siddiqui, COO (HR, Finance, IT & COSL), Maruti India; Mr Amitabh Chaudhary, MD, HDFC Life; Mr Rajiv Dubey, president, Mahindra & Mahindra; Dr Pritam Singh, Director General, IMI; and Mr Yogi Sriram, SVP, L&T.
