Role of CAT Convening IIM and CAT Convenor
The largest annual MBA entrance exam with 2.30 to 2.50 lakh applicants and more than 1.90 lakh actual test takers every year, CAT, conducted by IIMs offers MBA admission to more than 50000 candidates not only in 20 IIMs but also in other top B-schools including FMS, SPJIMR, MDI, IITs, NITIE among others. CAT exam notification is released by the CAT exam conducting IIM in the last week of July and the registration process for the exam begins in the first week of August. This all is done by CAT conducting IIM in consultation with the CAT committee which consists of other IIMs as well.
The CAT conducting IIM assigns the responsibility to convene CAT exam to one of its designated faculty members, preferably admission chair to smoothly conduct the exam in partnership with test conducting agency. The CAT exam convener not only has to convene the exam successfully but also has to explore the possibilities of improving the exam standard and functions as a bridge between 2.5 lakh CAT aspirants, all IIMs, Non-IIM B-schools like FMS, MDI, SPJIMR, Exam execution agency – TCS, Media and other stake holders. Some of the key initiatives taken by CAT conveners in the past are:
- In 2014, CAT Convener, Dr Rohit Kapoor, faculty at IIM Indore, increased the CAT exam time duration to 3 hours, increased the number of questions to 100 and reduced the testing window to two days
- In 2015, CAT Convener Prof Tathagat Bandyopadhyay, faculty at IIM Ahmedabad reduced the CAT testing window to single day and two slots of 3 hours each. The number of CAT exam sections were increased to three from earlier two. TITA questions with No penalty of negative marking were introduced for the first time. This pattern is still followed.
- In 2020, due to Covid pandemic, CAT Convener Prof Harshal Lowalekar, Faculty at IIM Indore, reduced the number of questions to 76, reduced the CAT time duration to 2 hours and increased the testing slots to 3 from earlier 2.
- In 2021, Prof M P Rammohan, CAT Convener and faculty at IIM Ahmedabad found that the number of 76 questions for a 2 hour CAT exam was high and reduced the number of questions to 66 to allow more time for the test takers to attempt the test. No change in test duration of 2 hours was made.
With the increased number of intake in IIMs and other B-schools, it is expected that more candidates may apply for CAT 2022.
With a few months remaining for CAT 2022 and official notification for the exam likely to be released in July last week, the experts have suggested to begin CAT exam preparation without further delay. Despite all the changes in CAT, the basic structure and exam syllabus of CAT 2022 is not expected to change
