After the close of CAT 2022 registration on Sept 21, the focus is whether CAT registration number will increase. While the final figures are yet to be released, Prof Ashis Mishra, CAT Convener & IIM Bangalore Faculty has an optimistic view which he shares with MBAUniverse.com. Over the years, CAT Registration number has remained more or less stagnated and an increase in CAT registrations will prove to be a good sign.
CAT Registrations Numbers

In the last decade, the total number of candidates taking CAT exam has remained stagnant. But, Post-Covid, can this change? On September 14, Prof Ashis Mishra, CAT Convener, had told MBAUniverse.com that CAT 2022 registration trends were better than the previous years. This news brought big cheers to the B-schools. However, since registrations were still on, everyone had their fingers crossed. Now that CAT registrations were closed on September 21, everyone is waiting for the confirmation.

Well, hold your breath for a few more minutes as we share the latest update on this important development. Responding to MBAUniverse.com on September 26, Prof Mishra shared, “CAT registration this year is better than the last few years.”

Will CAT Registration Number Increase?  CAT Convener said…
Earlier, on September 14, in response to a query from MBAUniverse.com on CAT 2022 registration trends, Prof Mishra told us, “So far, CAT 2022 registration trends have been better than the previous years.” He further added, “We are expecting a good number of aspirants to take the benefit of CAT 2022.” Last year, CAT 2021 registrations increased marginally to 2.30 lakhs from 2.28 lakhs in CAT 2020.

CAT 2022 registrations ended on September 21
The last date for CAT 2022 registration was extended by 7 days from September 14, 2022. The process was finally closed on September 21 without any further extension.

As is well known, Common Admission Test (CAT) is the largest MBA entrance exam, leading to admission opportunity in top Indian B-schools including 20 IIMs, FMS Delhi, SPJIMR, MDI, IITs B-schools among others. In the last decade, almost all the 20 IIMs and other top MBA colleges accepting CAT score have increased seats in their flagship program and have also launched new programs, but the total number of candidates registering for CAT exams have remained more or less same.

CAT Registrations Trends: MBAUniverse.com Analysis
MBAUniverse.com analysis also shows that about 15% candidates who register don’t take the test! The registrations for other leading exams like XAT and CMAT have also not increased. So even as Indian economy grows by 6-7%, the number of students aspiring for MBA education hasn’t increased.

Stagnation in number of candidates applying for CAT and other exams for pursuing an MBA in India poses a big challenge to management education in India. While the total number of CAT applicants and actual candidates in CAT appeared for exam go up and down marginally, there is not much deviation in percentage of test takers. Comparative trend of last 6 years is given below:

Have CAT 2022 Registrations increased? Good News is here…
While final numbers are awaited, here is the good news! On September 26, responding to MBAUniverse.com query, the CAT Convener reconfirmed his optimistic view and said, “While complete details can’t be revealed at this point of time, what I can say is that the CAT registration this year is better than the last few years.”

The increased CAT 2022 registrations would provide some relief to B-school leadership, admission chairpersons and all those associated with management education as this elusive growth is coming after many years.

Going by the above trends, the expected CAT 2022 registration number may go up between 2.35 and 2.40 lakhs. However, it may take some time for the CAT Convener to release the exact number of CAT 2022 registrations. With higher registrations expected for CAT 2022, it should provide some relief to B-school leadership, admission chairpersons and all those associated with management education.
