Why CAT 2020 Registration number Dipped? Possible Reasons
Globally, it is widely accepted that MBA Applications are countercyclical to economic growth. If economy does badly, MBA exam registrations and applications go up, and visa versa. In this context, CAT 2020 Registration dip has surprised some education analyst, as they expected a marginal increase as per global trends. Many top global MBA programs have seen double-digit increases in applications. For instance, applications to Wharton’s MBA program has increase by 21%, and applications for September intake at INSEAD soared by 58%! Other top B-schools like Harvard Business School have also reported significant jumps.

So, what explains this dip in CAT 2020. There could be number of reasons due to which registration number for CAT 2020 has gone down:

1. Why risk your job! Almost 50% of candidates who apply for CAT exam and IIMs are candidates with some working experience. With millions of white collar jobs lost in last 6 months in India due to COVID crisis, it’s understandable that working executives don’t what to quit their jobs for MBA education, as they fear that getting into good companies may be harder due to prolonged slowdown.

2. Rise of Edtech for Skilling
For working executives, and even freshers, Edtech platforms are God-sent in COVID times. While global platforms like Coursera, Edex and Udacity are offering best in class courses by top international universities, Indian platforms like Upgrad, Simplilearn, Great Learning are filling the need for Indian content. Most of these courses are offered at a fraction of what IIMs charge, and help candidates improve their job prospects. Of Course, these online courses are not a replacement for a fulltime on-campus quality MBA, but they serve a phycological need.

3. Online Teaching, not at par with On-campus MBA experience?
Due to COVID 19, all B-schools have started their sessions on Online platforms in September. While the step is taken keeping in view the safety of students, they do not find it as good as campus based in classroom interaction. Speaking to MBAUniverse.com in strict confidence, many current IIM students have expressed concern over the learning outcomes. They were optimistic of moving to campus soon.
