Dr. Ramesh Bhat Takes Over as SVKMs NMIMS Vice Chancellor
Dr Ramesh Bhat has been appointed full time Vice Chancellor at SKVMs NMIMS Deemed to be University Mumbai. As the NMIMS VC, he will be heading 17 specialized schools with 750 full-time faculty members. Dr Bhat had been acting as the Universitys Officiating Vice Chancellor since March of this year. He succeeds Dr Rajan Saxena who served as NMIMS VC for twelve years from 2009
After a long pause of remaining without a permanent Vice Chancellor, SKVM’s NMIMS Deemed to be University has now got Dr Ramesh Bhat as its full time Vice Chancellor who has taken over the charge as VC of NMIMS on December 17, 2020. As the NMIMS VC, he will be heading 17 specialized schools with 750 full-time faculty members.
Dr Bhat had been acting as the University's Officiating Vice Chancellor since March of this year. He has also been serving as the Dean and Provost, School of Business Management, NMIMS since 2017.
Speaking on his appointment, Dr. Bhat said, "I look forward to working with our esteemed faculty, our hard-working staff, and our student body to maintain NMIMS' commitment towards academic brilliance. We will further strengthen our research-based approach as our focus shifts towards the timely implementation of the National Educational Policy."
Dr. Bhat has led a long and distinguished career as an educator and academician. An alumnus of the Delhi School of Economics and Harvard University, Dr. Bhat has worked in some of the top business schools. Prior to NMIMS, Dr. Bhat served as Professor of Finance at IIM Ahmedabad, from 1986 to 2008 and 2014 to 2016. While working at IIM, Dr. Bhat was affiliated with some of the institute's key initiatives, including the Management Development Programs which he headed. He has served on adjunct and visiting faculty positions at ISB Hyderabad, the University of North Carolina at Chapel-Hill, and IIM Udaipur. He has also worked at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, and Shri Ram College of Commerce.
Apart from his academic background, Dr. Bhat has been part of several policy-making committees at the national level. He served as an Advisor to the Ministry of Human Resource Development and has been a member of various committees of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Planning Commission. He has worked on multiple long-term consulting assignments with the Abt Associates India, DFID New Delhi, Royal Netherlands Embassy India, and various short-term consulting projects with the USAID New Delhi, CDC India, ADB, European Commission, and the WHO.
He has been closely associated with financial institutions, serving as an independent director at National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC), BEML, ITI Ltd, Corporation Bank, Ahmedabad Stock Exchange, and various other companies in India. From 2009 and 2014, he served as Executive Chairman of WOne Management Systems, a co-founded company.
In addition to his current responsibilities, Dr. Bhat is currently a board member of Basic Healthcare, a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the health of the last-mile population in rural areas.
Dr. Bhat holds a Ph.D. and Master's Degree in Finance from Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, and a Bachelor's Honours Degree in Accounting and Finance from Hans Raj College, University of Delhi. He is also a Takemi Fellow in International Health from Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, Harvard University, Boston.
He has contributed to various academic journals and papers. He has served as a member of the editorial boards for the Health Policy and Planning, Journal of Insurance and Risk Management, Journal of Health and Population in Developing Countries, and Journal of Health Management. The fourth 2020 edition of his book, A Casebook in Financial Management, co-authored with Prof IM Pandey, is published by McGraw Hill Education.
Dr Bhat succeeds Dr Rajan Saxena who served as Vice Chancellor of NMIMS for 12 years since January 2009 and was the Distinguished Professor of Marketing at NMIMS. In his leadership, NMIMS was accredited by NAAC with high 3.59 CGPA and highest A+ Grade.
