After a long pause of more than ten months, IIM Shillong has now got Prof D P Goyal, Dean MDI Gurgaon as its full time Director. Prof Goyal, who has taken over the charge as Director IIM Shillong on March 27, 2019 is the third full time director of the institute. He has been appointed for a term of 5 years.

Since May 2, 2018, IIM Shillong has been running without permanent director and Prof. Keya Sengupta, faculty at IIM Shillong was assigned the responsibility of Director In Charge of IIM Shillong during this period. The position was lying vacant since May 2018 after the term of Prof. Amitabha De, who served IIM Shillong as Director from June 17, 2013 to May 1, 2018, got over. 

The Board of Governors (BoG) headed by the chairman Shri. Shishir Kumar Bajoria has appointed Prof Goyal as its director after getting nod from MHRD.

Prof D P Goyal, with over 30 years of teaching, research and academic administrative experience, was working as Dean & Professor of Management Information Systems at MDI Gurgaon before joining IIM Shillong. He is a visiting Professor at Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark and has rich experience of working in various senior administrative positions including Dean (Graduate Programmes, Accreditations & Rankings) and Dean-Executive Graduate Programmes at MDI Gurgaon.

Prior to joining MDI Gurgaon in 2009, Prof Goyal has served as Dean-Academics at IMT Ghaziabad. He has also served as Associate Professor (Reader) at Punjabi University, Patiala and Assistant Professor (Lecturer) at Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala.

Prof D P Goyal has conducted a large number of Executive Development Programmes for senior level managers and officers from public sector, private and government organizations. He has widely travelled globally on professional assignments and been to many countries including USA, Europe, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore among others.

Prof Goyal has remained on the expert, assessment and selection committees of Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Delhi; GGSIP University; All India Council for Technical Education; Department of Personnel & Training; National eGovernance Department (NeGD), Government of India and many universities and institutes including Central/State universities and IIMs. He is also on the Board of Governors; Academic Advisory Board; Academic Council. He is a member of a number of professional bodies including Association for Information Systems; Indian National Science Congress and Indian Society for Technical Education among others.  

An MBA from Punjabi University and PhD in Management Information Systems from Kurukshetra University, Prof Goyal has received advanced training from IIM Ahmadabad, IIM Kolkata and IIT Bombay.

In recognition of excellence in academics and research, Prof Goyal has been awarded with merit certificate, merit scholarship, best professor award and best research paper award at national and international platforms. His teaching and research interest areas include Management Information Systems; IS Strategy; Enterprise Resource Planning Systems; Business Process Management; eGovernance; IS Value for Business and Knowledge Management.

Prof Goyal has published over 60 research papers in national and international journals of repute. He has been principal investigator of UGC sponsored research projects. He has authored eighteen books including three highly acclaimed text books on Management Information Systems: Managerial Perspectives  published by Macmillan; Enterprise Resource Planning: A Managerial Perspective published by Tata McGraw Hill; and IT Project Management published by Macmillan. 

Prof Goyal has been the editor of research journals. He is on the Editorial Board of many national and international journals.

Established in 2007, IIM Shillong (Meghalaya) is the 7th in the family of 19 IIMs and is the only IIM operating and catering to 7 sister states of North East in India. During a short period, IIM Shillong has acquired the prominent place in the Indian Management education.
