According to the KMAT Information Bulletin, the Kerala KMAT syllabus is based on the fundamentals of the 10+2 curriculum, and the subjects covered, with the number of questions and marks for each, are as given below. English Language Usage and Reading Comprehension
This area has 50 questions worth 200 marks, the joint-largest share of the paper. As its name suggests, it tests two abilities: the correct use of the English language, and the understanding of reading passages. Since the syllabus rests on school-level fundamentals, a strong grasp of grammar and vocabulary from your school years, combined with regular reading practice, forms the base for this section. Because it carries as many marks as Quantitative Aptitude, it deserves equal preparation time.
Quantitative Aptitude
Quantitative Aptitude also has 50 questions worth 200 marks. With the syllabus based on 10+2 fundamentals, the mathematics tested stays within the level of school mathematics rather than graduation-level subjects. The challenge is usually speed and accuracy rather than difficult concepts, so revise the core concepts and formulas from your school years and practise solving questions under time pressure.
Data Sufficiency and Logical Reasoning
This area has 40 questions worth 160 marks. Data sufficiency questions ask you to judge whether the information given is enough to answer a question, while logical reasoning questions test structured thinking. Neither depends on subject knowledge, which makes this the area where regular practice with previous papers pays off most directly.
General Knowledge and Current Affairs
General Knowledge and Current Affairs has 40 questions worth 160 marks, about 22% of the paper. Current affairs, by nature, go beyond any school textbook, so this area depends on steady reading of the news over several months rather than last-minute study. Questions in this section are usually answered quickly if you know the answer, which also helps your overall time management.

Two clear patterns stand out. First, vocabulary dominates: word meanings, antonyms, spelling, synonyms and idioms together made up 44 of the 100 English questions, and grammar (prepositions, tenses, voice, narration, parts of speech and sentence correction) another 43. Second, reading comprehension was almost absent, with just one passage-based question across both papers.

Number system questions, covering divisibility, HCF and LCM, remainders and digits, were the single largest group, with 22 of the 100 questions. Algebra, ratio and proportion, simple and compound interest, and time and work followed with eight questions each. The mix shifted between sessions: Session 2 had more geometry and mensuration (five questions against one) and fewer sequence questions (one against five), so every topic needs coverage. All questions were within school-level arithmetic and algebra.

Analogies (12), odd one out (9), blood relations (8) and number and letter series (8) were the most frequent question types. Data sufficiency, despite its place in the section name, had only three questions, all in Session 1. The two papers also differed in style: Session 1 included seven statement-based questions on cause and effect, assumptions and conclusions, while Session 2 had none of these but more coding and decoding (five) and syllogisms (four).

Economy, finance and business was the largest group with 14 questions, and Kerala-specific general knowledge accounted for 10, five in each session, or one in every eight GK questions. The focus shifted between papers: Session 1 had seven questions on defence and national security, while Session 2 had seven on Indian polity and the Constitution. All questions carry four marks, so weightage depends entirely on the number of questions. English and Quantitative Aptitude together account for 100 questions and 400 marks, or about 56% of the paper, so they should get the largest share of your study time. Data Sufficiency and Logical Reasoning and General Knowledge and Current Affairs carry 160 marks each, about 22% apiece. A candidate who is strong in one of the smaller areas can still gain a real advantage there, because 40 questions represent a large block of marks. The right priority, therefore, is to cover all four areas, give more time to the two larger ones and use mock tests to find out where you lose the most marks.
