The TANCET exam pattern for MBA has 100 questions divided equally into five sections of 20 questions each. Each question carries 1 mark, so the TANCET total marks are 100. The sections appear in a fixed order in the question booklet, from Business Situations (Questions 1 to 20) to English Usage (Questions 81 to 100), and the full paper must be completed in 120 minutes. The TANCET marking scheme awards +1 mark for each correct answer, deducts 1/4 mark for each wrong answer, and gives no marks for unanswered questions.

Last year, TANCET 2026 exam was held on May 9, 2026. The table below shows the question numbers and the question format of each section, as seen in the TANCET 2026 paper. Candidates often ask, is there negative marking in TANCET exam? Yes, TANCET exam has negative marking. Each correct answer earns 1 mark and 1/4 mark is deducted for each wrong answer, while questions left unanswered carry no penalty. Shading more than one option for a question is treated as a wrong answer. The TANCET marking scheme is expected to remain the same in 2027. The marking rules are:

• Candidates need to choose one correct answer option out of four options.

• For each correct response, candidates will score 1 mark.

• For each wrong answer, 1/4 mark will be deducted.

• If any candidate selects multiple options as the answer, it will be treated as the wrong answer and 1/4 mark will be deducted for this.

• No marks are deducted for the questions left unanswered.

• Each question has four answer options, of which only one is correct.

• Shade the small box for your chosen option on the OMR answer sheet with a black ballpoint pen only.

• Shade only one box for each question; two or more shaded boxes are treated as a wrong answer.

Business Situations is the first section of the TANCET exam pattern, with 20 questions worth 20 marks. In TANCET 2026, all 20 questions were based on one continuous case. Each question named an item from the case, and candidates had to classify it into one of four fixed categories that were the same for every question.

The four answer options, in the words of the TANCET 2026 question paper, are:

• (a) A MAJOR OBJECTIVE in making the decision: one of the goals sought by the decision maker.

• (b) A MAJOR FACTOR in making the decision: an aspect of the problem, specifically mentioned in the passage, that fundamentally affects and/or determines the decisions.

• (c) A MINOR FACTOR in making the decision: a less important element bearing on or affecting a Major Factor, rather than a Major Objective directly.

• (d) A MAJOR ASSUMPTION in making the decision: a projection or supposition arrived at by the decision maker before considering the factors and alternatives.

In 2026, the case of about 316 words described an archaeological expedition led by Dr Amelia Carter into the Amazon rainforest to find the lost city of Eldoria. For example, Question 3, “The impact of monsoon rains on the expedition”, was a Minor Factor: the rain was an obstacle for the team, not a goal and not an element that decided the outcome.

Reading Comprehension has 20 questions based on 4 passages, with 5 questions on each passage. In TANCET 2026, the passages were short, about 120 to 360 words each. Most questions asked for facts, reasons or the main idea stated in the passage, and only the last passage leaned more on inference.

The four TANCET 2026 passages covered:

• Passage 1 (Questions 21 to 25): the digital workplace, covering automation, artificial intelligence, remote work and upskilling.

• Passage 2 (Questions 26 to 30): environmental challenges such as deforestation, pollution, resource depletion, climate change and loss of biodiversity.

• Passage 3 (Questions 31 to 35): working in multidisciplinary teams, with a focus on communication and adaptability.

• Passage 4 (Questions 36 to 40): the Keezhadi archaeological site in Tamil Nadu, covering Sangam-era urban life, Tamil Brahmi inscriptions, ancient trade links and ring wells.

The question types in this part of the TANCET paper pattern were direct fact recall, cause and effect, the central theme (for example, Question 31: “What is the central theme of the passage?”) and inference. No vocabulary questions were asked within the passages in 2026 exam paper; vocabulary was tested in English Usage. The section was rated Moderate.

Quantitative Ability has 20 standalone multiple-choice questions. In TANCET 2026, 11 questions tested school-level maths, while 9 needed reasoning rather than calculation: 7 logical reasoning puzzles and 2 questions on Roman numeral rules. No question needed advanced topics such as logarithms, trigonometry or coordinate geometry.

Most maths questions were one-step calculations. For example, Question 54 asked for the original price of a shirt whose price rose by 20% to 36 (answer: 30), and Question 57 asked for the probability of drawing a blue ball from a box of 10 red, 8 blue and 6 green balls (answer: 1/3). The section was rated Moderate in the 2026 analysis.

Data Sufficiency has 20 questions, each with a question and two statements labelled I and II. You do not need to solve the question; you decide whether Statement I alone, Statement II alone, both together or neither is enough to answer it. The four answer options stay the same for all 20 questions:

• (a) If the question can be answered with the help of Statement I alone.

• (b) If the question can be answered with the help of Statement II alone.

• (c) If both Statement I and Statement II together are needed to answer the question.

• (d) If the question cannot be answered even with the help of both statements.

In TANCET 2026, 13 questions were maths-based (algebra, odd and even numbers, areas, ratios, averages, percentage change and profit), and 7 used everyday situations such as reaching an airport on time or deciding whether today is a weekend. There were no charts, tables or graphs in this section.

Example (Question 63): What is the value of x? I. 3x + 2 = 11. II. x² = 25. The answer is (a): Statement I gives x = 3, while Statement II gives two values, 5 and −5, so it is not enough on its own.

English Usage has 20 standalone questions on vocabulary and grammar. In TANCET 2026, 15 of the 20 were sentence-completion questions, in which candidates chose the word that best fits a blank. The other five tested a conditional sentence, a synonym, an antonym, error spotting and an idiomatic phrase.

Two of the sentence-completion questions also tested grammar: subject-verb agreement (Question 82) and the use of a participle (Question 100). English Usage was the easiest section in 2026, as per the analysis.

• CMAT 2027: Conducted by the National Testing Agency as a 3-hour computer-based test. 

• MAT: Conducted by AIMA in multiple sessions. Its Data Analysis and Sufficiency section is the closest national-exam match to TANCET Data Sufficiency.

• KMAT Kerala: Conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Kerala, for MBA admissions in Kerala. Like TANCET, it has a separate Data Sufficiency and Logical Reasoning section.
