XAT Syllabus 2027

XAT 2027 syllabus can be divided into four sections: Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation, and General Knowledge. MBAUniverse.com has compiled the syllabus for each section, based on official information from XLRI Jamshedpur and type of questions that have appeared in past XAT exams. Check highlights below. You can also download XAT Exam Syllabus PDF from link below.

  • VA&LR section: This section includes critical & analytical reasoning, reading comprehensions (including poems & passages), vocabulary, basic English grammar, and other related exercises such as para jumbles and cloze tests.
  • Decision Making (DM) Section: This section presents scenarios drawn from both personal and professional lives of managers and leaders in organizations. Candidates will be required to apply critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and prioritization to make informed decisions.
  • Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation: The questions in the QA section are primarily formulated around 10th standard Mathematics. Notably, the emphasis is on application-oriented problems. The questions on DI are about clear interpretation, summarization and insightful analysis of the data.
  • General Knowledge Section: The General Knowledge section in XAT exam has 20 questions. Out of this, 12 questions are on current affairs and 8 questions are from static GK. This mix allows for a balanced evaluation of candidates' awareness of both ongoing events and foundational knowledge. It is important to note that scores from the General Knowledge section are not considered while calculating the XAT percentile. However, XLRI Jamshedpur uses GK scores during its final selection process.

XAT vs CAT Comparison: Is XAT tougher than CAT?

This is a common question among MBA aspirants. Understanding the exam structure of CAT and XAT is the first step to answering the question of whether is XAT is actually tougher than CAT. CAT has three sections with fixed time for each section. Whereas, XAT has longer timed sections and contains Decision Making and General Knowledge. XAT is more comprehensive, whereas CAT, with a shorter duration and strict limits, brings more pressure on time.

FeatureCAT 2026XAT 2027

Marking Scheme+3 correct, –1 wrong (MCQs)+1 correct, –0.25 wrong, no negative marking for GK
No of Answer Options45

To answer is XAT is tougher than CAT, it is important to analyze different sections. Both tests have the same three sections - Verbal, Quantitative, and Logical. However, XAT is further complicated with sections including Decision Making and General Knowledge. The comparison of XAT and CAT difficulty levels section-wise will allow aspirants clarity on what angle to prepare, the time to spend on the sections, and question presentation, hence, maximizing their efforts. The table below shows section-wise CAT and XAT difficulty levels:

SectionCATXATTougher Exam
VerbalRC & VARC + Logical + PoetryCAT
Quant & DILogical and conceptualCalculation heavy DI and lengthy Quants questionsXAT
Decision MakingNot includedCaselets & ethical dilemmasXAT
GKNot includedCurrent affairs + StaticXAT

In summary, multiple factors contribute to the perception that XAT is tougher than CAT. The exam’s length, diverse sections, and unpredictable questions make it demanding. Below are some important points why many believe XAT is tougher than CAT:

  • Additional Sections: XAT includes Decision Making and General Knowledge, both absent in CAT.
  • Longer Duration: XAT runs 3 hours versus CAT's 2 hours, demanding higher stamina and concentration.
  • Question Variety: XAT spans ethical, analytical, logical, and numerical reasoning in a single sitting.
  • Five Answer Options: XAT has five options per question versus CAT's four, reducing the probability of correct guesses.
  • Time Flexibility: XAT allows free movement across Part 1 sections; mismanagement of time within the 170-minute window can cost marks.
