MAT Syllabus 2024: Sectional Syllabus, Key Topics, Number and Type of Questions, Difficulty Level

Knowing MAT Exam Pattern, marking scheme is first step towards understanding MAT Syllabus. Based on the previous MAT question papers, MAT 2024 Exam Pattern and scoring scheme is as below:

Important Notes
1) Merit Score in the exam is calculated on the basis of first 4 sections only, and the score of section-5 is separately shown but is not taken into account to calculate the merit or percentile in the score card.
 
All the sections have equal number of questions. The Exam Syllabus for Quantitative Ability section is also very wide and covers each and every topic in Mathematics with greater emphasis on Arithmetic. MAT 2024 August exam syllabus is thus based on the past paper patterns which contain questions from all these sections.  

MAT 2024 August exam Syllabus is divided into 5 key sections namely Language Comprehension, Mathematical skills, Data Analysis and Sufficiency, Intelligence and Critical Reasoning, Economic & Business Environment with 30 questions in each section. Check syllabus for each section below.

MAT 2024 August Syllabus for Language Comprehension section in MAT is divided into 2 parts. The 1st part of syllabus covers topics on Reading Comprehension passages and the 2nd part covers topics on Grammar & other parts of Verbal Ability. 3.1 Detailed MAT Syllabus for Reading Comprehension (RC)

• MAT RC Syllabus covers current affairs making impact on Social Life, International Affairs, Govt policies and Schemes for example Triple Talaq, Clean India Mission, Migration of people from one country to other, Growing intolerance across the Globe, Agricultural policies, poverty eradication programmes 
• Business & Economic RC Passages for example Global economic changes, economic development at the cost of environment, Impact of Demonetization in India, Wasteful expenditure by Governments
• RC passages from various English Literature books, from articles authored by great philosophers, thinkers, from various speeches of great personalities like passages from Charles Dickens, Aristotle, Martin Luther King, Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi, Churchill among others
• Passages on Science & Culture including the journey to Modern world; Fading culture with the advancement of technology
• Abstract topics and fiction are also included in the Reading Comprehension Syllabus for MAT. These Passages make the candidates put themselves in the author’s shoes before answering the questions following these passages since they are opinion based.
• RC Passages on Historical events leading to social changes for example French Revolution, War of Roses, Social changes in Indian History and thoughts shared by  various activists which are very much relevant even today
• RC Passages from Mythology. These passages try to correlate the Mythological events with the current social structure and answers to the questions on them have to be inferred 

3.2 Detailed MAT Syllabus 2024 for Verbal Ability

• Jumbled Paragraphs (3-4 questions)
• Error Correction of Verb, Noun, Pronoun, Adjective, Adverb and other parts of speech in the Sentences.
• Correcting the sequence of sentences in the paragraph for example correct use of conditional sentence, time clauses, reported speech, passive writing (3-4 questions)
• Antonyms/Synonyms (5-6 questions)
• Fill in the blanks (3-4 questions)
• One word substitution (1-2 questions)
• Idioms/Phrases (2-3 questions)

Syllabus for Mathematical skills refers to the Quant topics on which MAT questions are based. MAT syllabus for Mathematics section is very wide and covers everything in Mathematics that you may or may not expect. • Number of Questions: 30.
• Sectional weightage in Syllabus: 20%
• Sectional Weightage in Percentile calculation: 25%
• Type of Questions: MCQs
• Past trend in exam syllabus for Mathematics shows that there is More emphasis on Arithmetic with  number of questions going in the range of 15 to 16.
• Questions were based on Interest, Percentages, Time and Work, Profit, Loss, Partnership.
• Other questions were based on topics like Equations, Ratio, Proportion & Variation, Geometry & Mensuration, Permutation and Combinations, Probability among others

The syllabus for Data Analysis and Sufficiency covers more topics on Data Interpretation. MAT Exam 2024 syllabus for Data Analysis and sufficiency section is very wide and covers everything in Data Interpretation and sufficiency of data that you may or may not expect. Major topics covered in the syllabus in this section are Data Tables, Data charts, Bar diagrams & Charts including Simple, Stacked, Composite Bar charts, Pie charts, Graphs – Line X-Y Graphs, Data analysis and Data comparison, Caselet based Data, Venn diagram, Data Sufficiency.

Syllabus on Economic & Business Environment refers to the GK syllabus and expects you to know everything under the Sun on Business & Economy, Who’s who, current affairs, static GK among others. This section includes questions from both Current Affairs and Static GK. Although this section carries 30 marks, it is not taken into consideration to determine candidate’s MAT score and percentile. So, this section is given low priority by students. The questions are asked from the following topics
